America is big. It’s an entire hemisphere containing 2 continents and 35 countries. And yet one of those countries, USA, has somehow convinced itself and many others (though not the Spanish-speaking world) that it is America. God bless America. America the beautiful. The American dream. As American as apple pie.
How can “America” be situated within “North America”? It makes no sense whatsoever. The other way around does make sense, however: North America is situated within America, along with Central and South America. So if a dimwitted president insists on renaming the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Ontario after the entire western hemisphere while thinking that he is renaming it after his country, then someone should perhaps set him straight.
But then what can you expect from the only country on Earth that still uses the “Imperial” system of measurements despite having proudly liberated itself from British imperialism? Or that invented a sport called “football” that is mostly played with the hands and whose “ball” is not even round? Gotta love those Usonians!
